Benson Steel faces transport challenge on Toronto Yorkdale Mall construction project
At Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Benson Steel faced a challenge: how to transport nearly 30 tonnes of steel girder over a 300-foot stretch atop the roof of one of Toronto’s busiest shopping malls. The general contractor is Carillion.

Work is ongoing for the Forensic Services and Coroner’s Complex at 1201 Wilson Avenue in Toronto. Project manager Carillion Canada began the six-storey, design/build project with basement and mezzanine in August 2010. The project was designed by Stantec Architecture Ltd. and McLaren, Wilson & Lawrie is lab architect

Steel hurdles for Aga Khan Museum build
Fabricating and erecting 740 tons or so of structural steel required for the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto posed a series of unusual hurdles. Benson Steel is the supplier and erector for the job. Aga Khan Museum specializes in artifacts from Muslim communities.

Steel on target in Milton, Ontario warehouse construction
Minneapolis-based retail chain Target will open numerous stores across Canada by 2013. K.C. Welding Ltd., an Angus, Ontario-based steel erector, is putting up a 1.3 million-square-foot steel joist, truss and girder box frame for the distribution centre in Milton, west of Toronto.

Ontario court finds owner found liable for verbal representation on sewer construction project
In its decision in George Robson Construction (Weston) Ltd. versus the Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice found that the written disclaimers in a tender call did not protect the owner from the verbal misrepresentations it made to the plaintiff bidder. The case involved a construction project for the installation of a sewer pipe under a highway.

Carillion Canada progresses on Ontario Coroner’s building in Toronto
Under construction by Carillion Canada, the Forensic Services and Coroner’s Complex on Wilson Avenue in Toronto is scheduled for completion in January, 2013. Designed by Stantec Architecture Ltd. and McLaren, Wilson & Lawrie, the 665,000-square-foot building will house the Centre of Forensic Sciences, the office of the Chief Coroner and the Coroner’s Courts.

Bluescape, Urban Capital work on River City in Toronto
Concrete work is moving along for River City West Don Lands Phase One in Toronto. Builder/developer Urban Capital Property Group, along with Bluescape Construction Management Inc., has completion of the project for mid 2013. The work includes one 16-storey building and one seven-storey with 349 units. The architects are Saucier + Perrotte Architects and ZAS Architects Inc.

(TSX:ARE) said construction of the new $42-million building for the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Ontario was complex because of the significant mechanical and electrical components required to serve more than 40 independent and unique research labs.

Structal-Bridges, a division of Boucherville, Quebec-based Canam Group Inc. (TSX: CAM), has secured a contract worth close to CA$27 million to fabricate the steel structure that will replace and expand the Moses Wheeler Bridgeon I-95, which crosses the Housatonic River in Milford, Connecticut

Major steel joist manufacturers are capable of producing 100-foot joists
Twenty years ago, most steel buildings used 30- to 40-foot-long steel joists and a 60-foot-long joist was considered a long span. Field splicing (bolting and/or welding joists together on site) was required for spans greater than 80 feet up to about five years ago.
