VIDEO: George Brown College health science campus in Toronto designed for collaboration
Training health care workers in a team environment and connecting the building automation systems over an Internet Protocol network were key design considerations for the George Brown College Center for Health Sciences, under construction by EllisDon Corp. in Toronto.
When the new campus is open, students will be able to practice “skilled team-based care,” said Lorie Shekter-Wolfson, Dean of Community Services and Health Sciences and Assistant Vice-President for Waterfront Development, during a site tour for reporters and analysts.
The campus, located at Queen’s Quay near Lower Sherbourne Street on the shore of Lake Ontario, includes one area that functions as a lab, debrief and observation room, where health care workers can learn operating room skills. The lecture halls include swivel chairs to facilitate group work.
Terry Comeau, executive director of the waterfront campus, said there will be building sensor probes, connected by Internet Protocol, that are intended to collect data including wind speed, temperature and humidity.
EllisDon is working on with Cisco Systems Inc. of San Jose, California on the building automation systems. The firms also teamed up on PwC Tower at 18 York Street.
The George Brown College waterfront campus was designed by Stantec Architecture and Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg (KPMB) Architects in a joint venture.
