Three construction firms in Fortune’s 100 best companies

DENVER, COLO.

Three construction companies made it onto Fortune’s 15th annual 100 Best Companies to Work For list, which ranks companies in the United States

Denver-based PCL Construction ranked 29^th, moving up from 38^th last year. This is the seventh consecutive year PCL has ranked on the list, which will be published in the magazine’s Feb. 6 issue and online now at fortune.com/bestcompanies.

“Our seventh consecutive ranking on this list positively reflects the evolution of our company and our industry,” stated Peter Beaupré, PCL’s U.S. president and chief operating officer, in a release.

“Our employee’s efforts, particularly through tough economic times, have continued to drive the quality of our workplace, and also the success of our business, safety on our projects, and our philanthropic leadership in the communities where we live.  We are fortunate to have such a remarkable team.”

A leader in the construction industry, PCL’s employee-owned structure, wellness initiatives, philanthropic efforts, and training programs all contributed to this year’s placement.

To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, Fortune partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America; 280 firms participated in this year’s survey.

Two-thirds of a company’s score is based on the results of the institute’s Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company.

The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management’s credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie.

The other third is based on responses to the institute’s Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs, and diversity efforts.

DPR Construction, based in California, ranked 13th on the list, moving up from the 22nd spot in 2011. British-owned commercial construction company Balfour Beatty Construction was 44^th, down from 40^th in 2010. Google, which employs 18,500 people, moved up three spots to top this year’s list.
