Structal-Bridges inks $12-million agreement with Archer Western for lift bridge

Canam Group Inc. of Boucherville, Quebec announced Wednesday its Structal-Bridges division has been awarded a $12-million contract by Archer Western Contractors to make truss spans and towers for the Memorial Bridge between Maine and New Hampshire.

The project includes the fabrication of three 300-foot through truss spans and two 163-foot towers for the moveable section of the lift bridge, which spans the Piscataqua River between Kittery, Maine, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, just off the Atlantic coast about 100 kilometres northeast of Boston. The existing bridge is currently closed.

“Structal-Bridges will also supply the steel structure to replace the approaches to the main bridge,” Canam stated in a press release. “Deliveries will begin in September 2012 and be completed by February 2013. Initially slated to reopen in spring 2014, the new bridge will be operational a year earlier, in July 2013, which will be made possible using accelerated bridge construction techniques.”

Archer Western Contractors is a subsidiary of Walsh Construction Company.

Structal-Bridges will make the components at the Canam Plant in Claremont, New Hampshire.

Wednesday's announcement comes two months after Structal Bridges announced a $27-million contract to fabricate part of the Moses Wheeler Bridge on Interstate 95 over the Housatonic River in Milford, Connecticut, about 100 kilometres northeast of New York City.
