Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association Trillium Awards recognizes asphalt plant operators
Representatives for this province’s “best of the best” hot mix asphalt plant operations took certain stage at the recent Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association’s (OHMPA) fall seminar when they received the association’s 2011 Trillium Awards.
The awards are given each year for plant operations which meet rigid criteria in seven operational categories: appearance; operations; environmental; safety; permitting and compliance; community relations; and industry participation.
To be even considered plants have to complete a self-audit, provide the name of a third-party reference, supply photographs and a short video of their operation and obtain a minimum number of required points in each category.
“The winners are not just pretty faces but must meet high standards,” said OHMPA plant and paving committee chair Mike Deckert, who presented the awards.

Construction workers lay asphalt at a project in Toronto. The Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association recently recognized asphalt plant operators with its Trillium Awards.
The Trillium Award Status is granted for a three-year period, at which point the plant must apply again for certification.
Seven of the nine awards were for plants which had applied for recertification. Noting that high number, Deckert said it’s “always a good sign that the producer sees a public relations value in the designation.”
Of the seven recertified applications, Miller Paving took the lion’s share for six facilities. They included the Timmins mobile plant; the Terex batch plant; the Mosport drum plant; the Sullivan asphalt plant; the NFN (North Bay) plant; and the Pave-Al Limited plant.
Coco Paving’s Oshawa plant was the seventh recertified award winner. However, this was the first time the plant has won the award as a Coco operation.
The plant and several others were purchased from Lafarge Canada a few years ago. In 2010 Coco obtained its first Trillium Award for its Belleville hot mix asphalt plant.
“We hope to catch up to Miller (Paving),” said asphalt plants director Domenic Passalacqua in a short interview on the importance of the Trillium Award program.
The first-time award winners were Dufferin Construction for its Bronte asphalt plant and Miller Paving for its CMI 150 portable drum.
