Sudbury, Ontario biosolids management facility to be funded through public-private partnership
The City of Greater Sudbury, Ontario announced this week that the federal government will contribute up to $11 million towards construction of a biosolids management facility.
A contractor will be selected to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the facility, to be located at the Sudbury Wastewater Treatment Plant on Kelly Lake Road.
The funding will come from the P3 Canada Fund, administered by PPP Canada Inc. for public-private partnerships.
The $11 million in federal funding will be 25 per cent of the total cost.
The city plans to build a biosolids facility because the use of tailings ponds near Lively is “no longer considered environmentally sustainable.”
The biosolids facility is intend to use either a heat or chemical process (or both) to kill pathogens and produce a biosolids product that could be suitable for long-term disposal or as a soil amendment product.
As previously reported in DCN, the four bidding consortiums are: Graham Construction and Engineering; Kenaidan and CH2M HILL; Maple Reinders and Veolia Water Solutions and Technologies and N-Viro Systems Canada LP.
