Urban Contracting selected to construct Paradise, Newfoundland treatment centre

The Newfoundland and Labrador health and community services department announced this week that a contract for the initial phase of construction of a mental health centre in the town of Paradise has been awarded to Urban Contracting (J.J. Walsh) Ltd.

The contract, valued as $344,000, will include the abatement and disposal of hazardous materials, demolition of the former Paradise Elementary School and backfilling to level the site with materials suitable for further construction.

“Further tenders for the building will be announced before the end of this year,” the province stated in a press release.

Paradise is west of the provincial capital of St. John’s on the Avalon Peninsula.

The province announced in August it would build mental health treatment centres in Grand Falls-Windsor and Paradise.

The centre in Paradise will accommodate up to 12 people, aged 12 through 18. It will have three separate living areas with four bedrooms each.

The facility in Grand Falls-Windsor is intended for youth with addictions.
