Niagara Region starts environmental assessment for possible upgrades to St. Catharines, Ontario wastewater treatment facility

The Regional Municipality of Niagara, Ontario announced this week it has initiated a Class Environmental Assessment to evaluate options for the Port Weller wastewater treatment plant in the City of St. Catharines.

As part of the project, the region has evaluated alternative design concepts and identified a “recommended alternative design concept,” which includes upgrading the existing facility to provide high-rate treatment of wet weather flows.

Niagara Region is the upper tier of municipal government for the City of St. Catharines and also includes 11 other cities and towns, including Niagara Falls, Welland and Fort Erie.

A wastewater servicing study completed by the region in 2009, along with a pollution planning control study conducted by the City of St. Catharines, identified a requirement for additional peak flow capacity to the Port Weller wastewater treatment plant, in order to provide primary treatment and disinfection for high flows and to meet the requirements of Ontario Ministry of Environment Procedure F-5-5, Determination of Treatment Requirements for Municipal and Private Combined and Partially-Separated Sewer Systems, which is a supporting document to the provincial guideline for levels of treatment of municipal and private sewage treatment works discharging to surface waters.

A Public Information Centre is planned in St. Catharines at 4:00 p.m. November 9 at the Port Weller Community Centre, 1 Bogart Street.
