Sudbury, Ontario to demolish water tower

The City of Greater Sudbury, Ontario announced this week it plans to start demolition work on the Ash Street water tower November 8.

City Council decided January 26 to demolish the tower because the cost to remediate it would exceed the $191,500 cost to demolish it. The city estimates the job will take three weeks.

The Ash Street tank rises about 33.5 metres above ground level.

Demolition will involve two cranes hoisting workers and equipment to the top of the tower. The bowl portion of the tank will be cut into pieces and lowered inside the tank. Once the roof and sides are removed, the remaining pieces will be lowered to the ground.

About 100 tonnes of scrap metal will be transferred to either Sault Ste Marie or Hamilton.
