Saskatoon bridge closed indefinitely over structural concerns

Saskatoon’s Traffic Bridge, opened in 1907, was closed indefinitely by the city on Aug. 24 after an inspection by city engineers revealed that corrosion to the bridge’s steel trusses threatened to bring the bridge down under its own weight.

The bridge was shut to vehicle traffic in fall 2005 after Stantec Consulting engineers found major deterioration in 12 key load-bearing members, though the bridge’s concrete river piers from 1905 were still in good shape.

About $700,000 in repairs were performed and the bridge re-opened in September 2006 with what was called a new, 20-year lease on life. No timetable for a reopening has been announced.
