Lafarge gets Nova Scotia government funding to cut cement carbon levels

BROOKFIELD, N.S.

The government of Nova Scotia has announced $2 million in funding to help some local industries switch to cleaner technologies. The Lafarge cement plant in Brookfield will get $670,000, a move the government says will help it become the first in North America to produce lower carbon cement.

The government says this initiative extends the life of the Brookfield quarry, reduces fossil fuel consumption and plant emissions, and should reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 70,000 tonnes a year.

Carbon Sense Solutions in Halifax is getting $467,000 to capture carbon dioxide in pre-formed concrete on an industrial scale. Other businesses receiving funding include Scotian Windfields Inc., CADtech Innovations Inc. and N-Viro Systems Canada LP.
